Business Cultural Challenges of the US Market

As Malaysia’s third largest trading partner, the United States is a key export destination for Malaysian companies. However, it is challenging to export to the US as it is difficult to establish productive working relationships with Americans due to cultural differences. Hence, Malaysian companies should be aware of the cultural challenges in the American market, and discover ways to bridge the differences to create successful business relationship.

There are several marketing considerations Malaysian exporters should be aware of, such as advertising, branding, website and social media. As US companies dedicate a large amount of time and money towards marketing and advertising, Malaysian companies need to build their brand and market it for the US market. Malaysian companies also need to have a high-quality website that is easy to navigate and offers clear information about their products and services. Besides that, Malaysian companies need to research and explore which social media platform is suitable for their business.

Trade shows and exhibitions are also exceedingly important and effective for Malaysian companies to familiarize themselves with the US business landscape, competitors and market. At trade shows and exhibitions, Malaysian companies will get to opportunity to meet and network with potential buyers and customers. MATRADE has advised Malaysian companies to return to exhibitions at least every two years to re-establish relationships and connections with US businesses.
