The Republic of Korea is one of Malaysia’s top trading partners, export destination and import source. The country offers potential export opportunities as they have a strong purchasing power and established FTAs with 59 countries.
There are opportunities for Malaysian food and beverage (F&B) products in the ROK market, especially cookies, biscuits, snacks and palm oil as Malaysia was ROK’s largest import source for these products in 2022. Potential F&B products for the ROK market includes confectionery, seafood, home meal replacement, ready to eat meals, beverages., vegan, organic, low sugar and high protein products.
The increased demand for convenience and healthy products has been attributed to the needs of health conscious and busy consumers, as well as single-person households and the ageing population. Value for money and convenience are important factors for consumers in the ROK. Besides that, there is potential for food ingredients such as gelatine, food additives, colouring, flavouring and preservatives.
Over the years, the halal industry in the ROK has been steadily growing due to the developing Muslim population and rapidly growing F&B market. ROK consumers have shown an increased interest and awareness towards halal products, and have begun to associate halal products with high quality standards, reliability, hygiene, sustainability and responsibility towards the environment. Consequently, more retail companies are procuring halal products for their stores to cater to the increased demand.
